Lending Services

These guidelines apply to all SWAN TAFE library services.

MEMBERSHIP

All students are automatically registered with the library when they enrol with Swan TAFE. Library Membership is free. The Student ID card fulfils the role of the library card and printing charge card.[Except at Midland Campus where a separate photocopier card must be purchased.]

Alternatively, to apply for a free LIBRARY CARD, bring to any Swan TAFE Library a:

  • Copy of your student enrolment form or other proof of enrolment in Swan TAFE or
  • Photographic proof of identity (eg driver’s license).

Library membership expires on the third Friday in December. If finishing before this date or transferring to another TAFE, advise the library to close the membership. Re-enrolment will reactivate a library membership.

BORROWING

Any Swan TAFE Library member may borrow or request items from any other campus. Some restrictions apply.
These are described in the table below.

To borrow from the library, present your Student ID Card/Library Card. Students are responsible for the safe return of all materials borrowed on their card. Borrow for your own use, not for others.

Students studying off-campus have special loan provisions to suit this mode of study. [link here to external student page]

Certain courses have SPECIAL or DEPARTMENTAL COLLECTIONS restricted to students enrolled in those courses. Specific loan rules apply to these collections. Information is provided at orientation.

RENEWING LOANS

Items on loan may be borrowed again. This is called a RENEWAL or EXTENSION. It is not necessary to bring the items into the Library.
Instead:

  • Present a Student ID/Library Card at the Library loans desk and request an extension.
  • Telephone any Swan TAFE Library.
  • Use the Renewal Button on the PATRON INFORMATION screen on the iPac.

Loans will not be renewed if:

  • The item has been renewed previously.
  • Another student has placed a REQUEST on the item.

  • The item is overdue or there are outstanding accounts or fines.

OVERDUE OR LOST ITEMS

When a student keeps an item past the due date, they will receive letters from the Library reminding them to return the items. Students with overdue items cannot borrow until all items are returned.

If a students loses an item, or it is not returned in reasonable time, they will receive an invoice for the replacement cost of the item (or item of similar value if out of print) plus an administrative charge of $10.00 per item. Australian Tax Office requires that GST be charged on all Library accounts.

Students may reduce this debt by returning the item(s), but the $10.00 service charge (plus GST) must be paid. Unpaid invoices are referred to a debt collection agency.

While a student has overdue items or outstanding accounts they are not permitted to borrow further items or use the library computer facilities.

PLACING A REQUEST

Request an item to be held for you if it is

  • On loan to another borrower
  • To have an "on the Shelf" item brought from another campus

Requests are placed using the REQUEST ITEM button on the search summary screens.

Requests are unavailable for Non-circulating materials [Reference, Teacher only etc], Closed Reserve, Special and Departmental collections.

When placing a request, select the most convenient pick-up campus. The campus Library will telephone the requestor when the item is ready to collect.

If the item is "on the Shelf" at another campus, allow two days for delivery. Items can be couriered at the requestor’s expense.

If the item is on loan, it will be available when returned. If needed before the due date, place a RECALL.

RECALLS

Recalls are used when another person urgently requires an item on loan. Only the Library Staff can activate recalls. The person who has the item on loan will receive a letter indicating that they should return the items within three days. The date due is altered. If not returned within three days, normal overdue procedures/fines will apply.

EQUITY OF ACCESS

These guidelines supplement the SWAN TAFE By-Laws, Student Code of Conduct and Computer Use Policy & the Library Code of Conduct. They are developed to provide equitable access for all Swan TAFE clients to Library collections and services. In order to maintain that equity of access the Library reserves the right to withdraw lending services to persons who have a continually poor lending history.
