Pearl Nichols 1910
Pearl L Nichols who won a scholarship in Freehand Drawing in 1910, was the great grand-daughter of a jeweller who had begun his apprenticeship in an unusual way. As the son of the Count and Countess Des Vignes of France he narrowly escaped execution at the fall of the Bastile, when he and his brother were smuggled to London by a faithful servant and taken under the wing of the jeweller.
Pearl is remembered as being a proud, forthright woman who continued to achieve excellence with her arts and crafts throughout her life. As the matron of country hospitals she captured the beauty of the wildflowers in the region and often won first prize for her embroidery and crocheting in local shows.
