Liela Burrows 1919

With the War over 1919 was a year of renewed optimism for Midland Junction Technical School. The school was offering a total of thirteen subjects - some directly linked to the railways, some supporting other industries and some for personal development.

Eliza (known as Liela) Burrows, a student of Book Keeping was very proud of this Midland Technical School reference. Photo courtesy of Janey WatsonIt obviously helped with her employment at Padbury’s Stores in Guildford.  Padbury’s was one of the most prominent department stores in Western Australia at that time, providing its customers with a wide range of dress fabrics as well as tools for farming.  Leila remained at Padbury's until she married in 1926.

But 1919 must have also been an extremely difficult year for Leila. Her father, an employee of the Western Australian Government Railways was killed in a shunting accident at the Midland Station – right next door to where she was studying Accountancy at the Railway Institute and Technical School Building.
