Elsie Morgan 1930

In the early 1930s Elsie Morgan attended night classes at Midland Junction Technical School. After working during the day in a department store in Perth she would get off the train at Midland Junction, walk across the railway line and learn about home crafts such as cushion and lampshade making as well as commercial subjects. When World War II broke out women were required in a wide range of support industries and Elsie’s life took a different turn.

She became a cook with the Airforce traveling on a troop train to Melbourne where she did a butchering course and learnt how to cook for large numbers of servicemen.  On her return she served as a cook at Geraldton, Cunderdin and Pearce. She was also instructed in drill marching and how to recognise the different insignias on Airforce uniforms.

She met her husband Cyril who was also based with the Airforce at Pearce. After they married she resigned from the Airforce to bring up her family but remained a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Victoria Park Branch of the Airforce Association until she moved to Albany where she became involved in community work.
