Director's Report 1911
Midland Junction Technical School
Satisfactory classes have been maintained in English, Mathematics, History and Geography, Bookkeeping, Shorthand, Dress Cutting, Woodworking, and Art. Smaller classes in Cookery, Typewriting, Elocution, and Art Needlework commenced in the third term, and Millinery in the fourth term, and there is every indication of successful classes during the coming year.
The initiation of Free Continuation classes has very materially increased the usefulness of the school, and excellent work has been done by the instructors and students. At the beginning of the third term the classes were greatly interfered with by the operation of the Compulsory Military Training Act, but after an interview with the Local Area Officer a readjustment of the timetable was arranged whereby classes were able to continue without serious interruption. The Technical classes are still considerably hampered by the lack of suitable seating accommodation. The school has increased to such an extent that a separate building is urgently required, and it is hoped that negotiations which have been carried on with the Railway Department will, at no distant date, result in the erection of buildings which will serve for day classes for railway apprentices and for evening classes for Technical School students.
The exhibition of students’ work has been the means of demonstrating to parents and friends the high class of work performed by the students.
Thanks are due to the Midland Junction Council for their liberal donation of £2 2 s. to the Prize Fund, and also to the Midland Railway Company for sustained interest in the School. The Proprietor of the Swan Express has rendered much appreciated assistance by prominently placing before the public the advantages to be derived from attendance at the school.
