Perth Technical School Annual Report  1905

Midland Junction Technical School

The large population now resident here renders it desirable that some effort should be made to meet the needs of the many young men engaged in the Railway Workshops. Therefore an endeavour was made in 1904 to initiate classes in mathematics and mechanical drawing, also in some of the ordinary evening class subjects.

The classes in mathematics and mechanical drawing attracted an earnest hard working body of students, and as noted elsewhere special attempts will be made to meet the further needs of these and other students. The classes are at present held in the State School at Midland Junction but it is hoped that a suitable site will soon be available to erect rooms better suited for the needs of technical school work.

Abstract from the 1905 Report of the Director of Technical Education

…At Midland Junction a very successful commencement has been made with the Evening Classes, under Mr McDougall; in fact this centre has gained part of what was lost by the Fremantle centre. Endeavours are being made to secure ground for a technical school site in this neighbourhood, and this branch will certainly be one of the most prosperous and useful in the State….

TECHNICAL SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
At the end of 1904 a scheme for Technical School Scholarships was drawn up and issued in connection with the reorganisation of the Technical School courses.

Age of entry
The minimum age at which students may enter the school is

bullet14 for the Lower Technical School and
bullet15 for the Upper Technical School.

Midland Junction Technical School

At present evening classes are held in the State School, but it is expected that a permanent site for a Technical School will soon be provided. The students from the Government Railway workshops and Midland Railway Workshops have done most satisfactory work in the classes already established and it is hoped, with the support of the Railway Department, that adequate provision will be made for the technical and scientific education of the large body of employees in the Railway Workshops.

No new classes have been introduced at Midland during 1905 but classes in Mathematics, Practical Plane and Solid Geometry, and Mechanical Drawing have been continued with gratifying results, and a number of students were successful at the Annual Examinations.
